Rocky Vase
Like most grottos and caves, Gruta da Lapa Doce originated through chemical erosion processes. Rainwater, in contact with atmospheric gases, becomes slightly acidic, creating cavities that, over time, widen and form underground landscape systems. Inside Lapa Doce, the negative imprint of the water’s paths is recorded on the limestone walls and ceilings. From highly porous and vulnerable rock, as if in opposition, forms with sharp edges and angles emerge. Countering the crystal’s natural tendency to round under high heat, Jacqueline Terpins, in a new approach to the material, guides the Rocky vase to gain angles, corners, and edges, using wooden and iron tools. Like limestone under the action of water, the crystal takes on and incorporates the transformations generated by precise, delicate interventions.
