Mendori Table Lamp
**“IN-EI”** – Japanese term for “shadow, shading, nuance.” The art of lighting has a conceptual and technological legacy at Miyake Design Studio dating back to 2010, when Issey Miyake and his research and development team, called Reality Lab., introduced the **132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE** project. This new process was developed using a mathematical program based on three-dimensional geometric principles, created by Jun Mitani. **132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE** is an extremely ingenious way to produce clothing and represents yet another example of the paths that the pursuit of innovative textile technologies can take. The project is born at the intersection of creativity and mathematics, resulting in garments that can be folded flat and transformed into three-dimensional volumes from a single piece of fabric. As Reality Lab. explored the potential of **132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE** beyond apparel, lighting emerged as a natural extension of this process. Thus **IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE** was born, the result of a collaboration with Artemide, combining the brand’s lighting expertise with the lab’s innovative approach to materials and design. The **IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE** lighting collection was co-developed and manufactured by Artemide. It is a line of floor, table, and pendant lamps. Each shade is created from two- or three-dimensional mathematical principles, in which light and shadow alternate harmoniously. Miyake’s exclusive folding technology creates sculptural forms while ensuring the necessary rigidity. The structure of the recycled material, combined with an additional surface treatment, allows the shades to perfectly hold their shape without the need for an internal frame, and they can also be reshaped when needed. When not in use, they can be easily stored flat.
