Ron Arad
Ron Arad is Israeli, from the capital Tel Aviv, the son of artists (his mother a painter and his father a photographer). He attended the Jerusalem Academy of Art until the early 1970s. In 1974, he settled in London, where he enrolled at the Architectural Association under the direction of Peter Cool and Bernard Tschumi. With classmates such as Nigel Coates, Peter Wilson, and Zaha Hadid, he moved closer to the world of art and culture, showing an interest in design and the new aesthetics of materials.
In 1981, together with Dennis Groves and Caroline Thorman, he founded One Off, a creative agency that developed a series of furniture in metal tubing, as well as pieces in bent wood and steel. All products of bold and sensual beauty. He also became known for restaurant projects in London, Adidas stores in Paris, and the futuristic design of the Tel Aviv Opera House.
He exhibited his work in many galleries and museums, including the Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. One of his most recent and famous works is the new Adidas store in Paris. Not to mention the incredible partnership with Yohji Yamamoto, for which he designed the Y’s store in the Roppongi district of Tokyo. He created the wonderful Hotel Duomo in Rimini, Italy, the Holon Museum in Israel, and exhibited at the Dolce&Gabanna maison, with sculptures made especially for the occasion.
