Maarten Van Severen
Maarten Van Severen studied architecture at the Ghent Academy of Art. He designed his first furniture pieces in 1986 and the following year set up an independent workshop. This unified design-and-production process was for a long time a fundamental aspect of his work, which was devoted to examining basic furniture types: chair, table, chaise longue, shelving, cabinets. Van Severen developed essential solutions for these categories based on a comprehensive investigation of questions of form, material, and construction.
Until his death in 2005, in Ghent, Maarten Van Severen developed a range of new designs for Vitra, which progressively entered serial production.
