Le Corbusier

Charles Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, was an architect, painter, and designer, and became one of the most important names in 20th-century architecture. Corbusier had a major influence on shaping the modernist generation of Brazilian architects, carried out extensive academic and theoretical work, and published many articles on his architectural studies. An admirer of Greek architecture, he studied the uses of the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence.

Corbusier came to Brazil at the invitation of Lúcio Costa in 1936 to provide consulting on the design of the Gustavo Capanema Palace. His ideas had a strong influence on the team, which, in addition to Lúcio Costa, included names such as Oscar Niemeyer and Burle Marx. In 1949, Le Corbusier was chosen together with Niemeyer as responsible for the design of the United Nations headquarters in New York.

As an urban planner, he proposed a new urban arrangement suited to modern life. The idea of creating garden neighborhoods for the wealthiest classes is his.

As an architect, he proposed the use of new materials, such as reinforced concrete.
