Atelier Van Lieshout
Atelier Van Lieshout is the studio founded by sculptor, painter and visionary Joep van Lieshout. After graduating from the Rotterdam Art Academy, Van Lieshout quickly gained fame with projects that traveled between the world of easy-to-clean design and the non-functional area of art: sculpture and installations, buildings and furniture, utopias and dystopias. In 1995, van Lieshout founded his studio, Atelier Van Lieshout; since then he has worked under the studio name to undermine the myth of artistic genius. Over the past two decades, Atelier Van Lieshout has produced a true quantity of works spanning art, design and architecture: sculpture and installations, buildings and furniture, utopias and dystopias. What these works have in common are several recurring themes, motifs and obsessions: systems, power, autarky, life, sex, death. The human individual in the face of a greater whole. With this body of work, which includes autonomous and commissioned artworks, he has gained a strong international reputation. The Atelier has exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, with shows at MoMA, New York, the Hayward Gallery, London, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Additionally, the Atelier has worked on various commissions for public and private clients.
