Amélia Tarozzo

Amélia Tarozzo was born in Ribeirão Preto on May 16, 1978. A passion for art and architecture has always been present in her life. Since childhood, she enjoyed drawing and painting, creating objects, dolls, and settings for children’s play. She always heard from her elders how creative she was and how gifted she was at drawing. In her home, furniture making was a common topic. Her paternal grandfather was a carpenter and had his factory and store for nearly 50 years in Ribeirão Preto – “Móveis Tarozzo.” Amélia never met him, but undoubtedly inherited his taste and talent for carpentry.

In 1996, after a very happy childhood on a farm full of children (Amélia has seven siblings), she left for São Paulo at age 17 to study Architecture at FAAP. During the course, in the wood workshop, she had her first experience designing and making a piece of furniture. There, a lounge chair in laminated wood, leather, and curved iron was born. She graduated in 2000 and, like any young person eager for financial independence – which was not possible with architecture internships – began working in other sectors, such as marketing, sales, events, and corporate citizenship, only returning to Architecture four years later. These jobs were fundamental for broader learning of processes, areas, and knowledge required in any company that architects often have little experience with. During nearly three years working in the furniture sector and after taking carpentry and lathe courses, she learned about responsible wood use, its various species, uses, and particularities. She became acquainted with traditional carpentry joinery techniques that restrict the use of nails and screws, prioritizing structures made with the wood itself. She followed the design, manufacturing, and commercialization processes of furniture, familiarized herself with machines and tools, and ultimately fell in love with wood.

In 2007, she began designing furniture for friends, family, and her own home. These people encouraged her to launch her first collection and claim a space in a field that is rapidly developing in Brazil and gaining international visibility. In December 2008, she opened her atelier in Vila Madalena in São Paulo. Amelia seeks in her designs fundamental characteristics for good design such as comfort, ergonomics, innovative aesthetics, and responsible use of raw materials.

Her inspiration comes from art, object design, architecture, and small everyday details that normally go unnoticed. The manufacturing process is entirely handcrafted. The pieces are made of solid and laminated wood, using traditional carpentry joinery techniques. She uses only raw materials authorized by IBAMA and preferably certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), an international organization whose mission is to promote and facilitate good management of Brazilian forests according to Principles and Criteria that reconcile ecological safeguards with social benefits and economic viability. The result is lightweight, timeless pieces with pure, clean, and geometric design.
