Aeron Chair

Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick

The story retold

While its iconic form has remained largely unchanged, the Aeron chair has been remastered, from the casters up to every other detail, to meet the needs of today’s work. With the help of its original co-designer, Don Chadwick, we have fully updated the chair based on the latest research into the science of sitting and advancements in materials, manufacturing, and technology.

Fully Remastered

Since Aeron was launched in 1994, we at Herman Miller have learned a great deal about how to best support people in the various postures they adopt throughout the workday. With the new chair, we have incorporated two decades’ worth of technological and ergonomic improvements to enhance its health-positive design and broaden the range of cross-performance capabilities. With updates including a more refined tilt mechanism, adjustable PostureFit SL, and 8Z Pellicle suspension, the new Aeron performs more intelligently than ever before—so that you can too.

Entering new zones

Pellicle, the innovative elastomeric suspension of the original Aeron, eliminated pressure points that restricted circulation and pushed the boundaries of material design. The new 8Z Pellicle pushes the material into a whole new zone—eight of them. Across the seat and back, eight latitudinal zones of varying tension—firmer at the edges and softer where the body makes contact—envelope the sitter and provide increased comfort and ergonomic support.

Stay cool

By doing away with foam and fabric, Aeron solved one of the biggest drawbacks of sitting for long periods: the buildup of heat and moisture near the body. Pellicle allows air, body heat, and water vapor to pass through the seat and backrest, helping to maintain comfortable and consistent skin temperatures. While many chairs have adopted mesh as a way to provide some performance, there is only one Pellicle.

Support that values posture

If an active body is strongest when standing, with the chest open and the pelvis slightly tilted forward, it makes sense that you would be better off sitting that way too. And that is exactly where PostureFit SL comes in. Individual, adjustable pads stabilize the sacrum and support the lumbar region of the spine to mimic a healthy standing position.

Combined comfort

All the improvements implemented in the new Aeron were designed to work together to provide comprehensive support for the human form. PostureFit SL and 8Z Pellicle represent a higher level of ergonomic expertise and state-of-the-art support to enhance the user experience. Together, they create total spinal support—calculated, localized support that moves the skeletal system into a position that provides support all the way to the base of the spine. This is achieved both when the person is upright and when they move, in order to offer more active support.

If you are well reclined

Staying in a single position reduces the natural pumping action of the muscles, which provides nutrients to the intervertebral discs. The Aeron chair’s tilt allows it to move with the body so naturally that people can shift their position, from forward-leaning to reclined postures, intuitively. The updated, lighter tilt mechanism offers an even smoother experience of movement (and stillness) to the user through a smoother trajectory and an excellent balance point. Aeron was designed to keep people in contact with the back of the chair and in control of their continuous movement throughout the entire recline range.

A smooth transition

The new Aeron allows people to shift from an upright position to fully reclined smoothly and simply. Although the original design allowed for various positions and postures, the frame angle has been adjusted 1.8 degrees forward to better support the body in an upright position and across a more diverse range of postures. Whether a person is leaning forward for typing and intense focus or fully reclined for conversation or contemplation, they will find that the new Aeron moves with them—seamlessly—to offer proper ergonomic support for a wide variety of tasks.

Health-positive design

With Aeron, Stumpf and Chadwick proved that a chair is not just for sitting, and that you don’t just have to sit in it—it can actually be better for you.

Design for cross-performance

For the people who sit in Aeron, cross-performance design means the chair accommodates a wide range of activities and postures people adopt while working—from intense focus, where they lean forward, to a contemplative and relaxed reclined position. For designers and companies, cross-performance makes Aeron suitable for a wide range of workplace settings—from residential workstations to shared workshops.

Inclusive design

With chairs, one size does not fit all. Based on the design approach known as ends-to-the-middle, Aeron comes in three sizes, providing a widely inclusive fit—and offering the same comfort to the greatest number of anthropometric types compared to any other chair.

Environmentally sensitive design

The Aeron chair was designed considering its impact on the indoor environment where it will be used, and on the broader environment that provides the resources for its manufacture.

A broad color palette

Through hundreds of samples, tests, and iterations, we arrived at three very accurate holistic material expressions. Graphite is the darkest, a modern take on the original Aeron. Carbon offers a balanced neutral touch that works equally well in cool and warm environments. Mineral is the lightest, ideal for more open office environments.

Created through a unique painting process, Aeron’s satin aluminum finish mimics the suggestive glow of high-end electronic equipment. The colors were developed to harmonize with the chair’s other components. Every detail contributes to a harmonious whole.
